Synopsis

The King James Bible or Authorized Version (1611) comprises the Old Testament, the Apocrypha and the New Testament, from God's creation of the heaven and earth and the fall of man in Genesis, through the life Jesus Christ, to St John the Divine's foretelling of the end of the world and God's final judgment in Revelation. Among the most influential texts of all time and the cornerstone of the Christian faith, the King James Bible is the work of the great scholars and theologians of the early seventeenth century and reflects their desire for greater stability in the Christian religion. They revised and retranslated existing versions, including that of William Tyndale, to create a standardized Bible that would be accessible to all speakers and readers of English. Definitive and highly readable, this superb edition brings new vigour to one of the finest pieces of English prose.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Catalogue of English Bible Translations

While other Bible catalogs are available, this comprehensive reference book is destined to become the standard in the field. Chamberlin's one-volume work traces the publication history of multiple editions of Bible translations and offers valuable decriptive annotations. The catalog not only includes complete Bibles, but also Old and New Testaments, partial texts, commentaries that include translations, children's Bibles, Apocryphal writings, and the Koran, as well. Other bibliographies are usually limited to editions commonly found in academic libraries, but Chamberlin's guide also includes Bibles found in private collections. Overall, this catalogue contains more than five times as many entries of different English translations as two other Bible bibliographies, those by Hill and Herbert, combined. The entries are grouped in 151 categories, and within each category entries are listed in chronological order. The accompanying annotations identify the translator and provide an overview of the contents of each work. The detailed indexes make this bibliography a convenient tool for researchers. Bible scholars, collectors, and rare book dealers will find this catalogue a necessary addition to their libraries.

The Book of Magic

A rich, wondrous anthology of the Western magical tradition, from the Old Testament to Doctor Faustus and Paradise Lost, now in a Penguin Classics black spine edition “. . . as when iron is drawn to a magnet, camphor is sucked into hot air, crystal lights up in the Sun, sulfur and a volatile liquid are kindled by flame, an empty eggshell filled with dew is raised towards the Sun . . .” The Bible is full of stories featuring forms of magic and possession—from Moses battling with Pharaoh’s wizards to the supernatural actions of Jesus and his disciples. As, over the following centuries, the Christian church attempted to stamp out “deviant” practices, a persistent interest in magic drew strength from this Biblical validation. A strange blend of mumbo-jumbo, fear, fraud, and deeply serious study, magic was at the heart of the European Renaissance, fascinating many of its greatest figures. This is a book filled with incantations, charms, curses, summonings, cures, and descriptions of extraordinary, shadowy, only half-understood happenings from long ago. It features writers as various as Thomas Aquinas, John Milton, John Dee, Ptolemy, and Paracelsus along with anonymous ancient and medieval works that were, in some cases, viewed as simply too dangerous even to open. The Book of Magic will be welcomed by everyone from those with the most casual interest in the magical tradition to anyone drawn to the Renaissance and the tangled, arcane roots of the scientific tradition. This book aims to restore the balance by examining practical ways in which the arts can help health professionals to understand the experience of suffering and illness. Written by a family physician with 25 years experience, Humanity in Healthcare offers a broad perspective on the potential contribution of the arts toward fostering a humane approach to the care of those who are ill or suffering. It refers to a wide range of literature from prose and poetry, sociology, history, philosophy, politics, religion and spirituality. This book is an invaluable resource for all medical and healthcare professionals as well as students of the medical humanities.

Author Unknown, Author Undaunted

Do you question the spiritual direction of America, the violence in schools, shopping centers and churches? Do you have questions about your church and the doctrines being taught, or perhaps, the doctrines not being taught? Then you're not alone! There are millions who question the institution of religion. ONE KINGDOM, ONE KING is a search for the church or the body that Jesus Christ said He would build. There are as many as 450 organized religions and denominations who claim to be the true church and who claim to be the path to heaven, but just who or what is the true church? What does its organization look like? The issues of Sabbath changing to Sunday and the celebration of Christmas and Easter; doctrines of the trinity, immortality of the soul, and ever-burning hell; and the role of Israel both past and present are covered, plus others. Many of these subjects are misunderstood or just plain rejected by most denominations. There are many people, if challenged, who would respond if these subjects were explained in simple English. Many just simply have never been taught by their Pentecostal preachers. And other folks are being lied to by the 'professional' religious elite! ONE KINGDOM, ONE KING is a very small investment for a wealth of knowledge--knowledge that Lucifer the devil doesn't want you to find out. What do you have to lose by taking time to read? An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest. Find out what the world of man's religion does not want you to learn. Connect what American religion is doing today to what the Holy Bible says and what is happening in America. The obvious will become apparent!

Do you question the spiritual direction of America, the violence in schools, shopping centers and churches?"

Many Paths, Many Truths

Have you ever wondered why there is so much religious diversity in the world? How did this story of humanity begin and what ancient wisdom has been lost along the way? Can you believe in God and not be religious? Or simply put, why do human beings have a need to believe in something… anything? This book is a journey through the genesis of faith, the evolution of ancient spiritual practices, the dawn of major world religions and an exploration of the emerging frontiers of New Age spirituality.

The Life of Texts

The textual foundations of works of great cultural significance are often less stable than one would wish them to be. No work of Homer, Dante or Shakespeare survives in utterly reliable witnesses, be they papyri, manuscripts or printed editions. Notions of textual authority have varied considerably across the ages under the influence of different (and differently motivated) agents, such as scribes, annotators, editors, correctors, grammarians, printers and publishers, over and above the authors themselves. The need for preserving the written legacy of peoples and nations as faithfully as possible has always been counterbalanced by a duty to ensure its accessibility to successive generations at different times and in different cultural contexts. The ten chapters collected in this volume offer critical approaches to such authors and texts as Homer, the Bible, The Thousand and One Nights, Dante, Montaigne, Shakespeare, Eliot, but also Leonardo da Vinci's manuscripts uniquely combining word and image, as well as Beethoven's 'Tempest' sonata (Op. 31, No. 2) as seen from the angle of music as text. Together the contributors argue that an awareness of what the 'life of texts' entails is essential for a critical understanding of the transmission of culture.

Body Work

Memoir meets craft masterclass in this “daring, honest, psychologically insightful” exploration of how we think and write about intimate experiences—“a must read for anybody shoving a pen across paper or staring into a screen or a past" (Mary Karr) In this bold and exhilarating mix of memoir and master class, Melissa Febos tackles the emotional, psychological, and physical work of writing intimately while offering an utterly fresh examination of the storyteller’s life and the questions which run through it. How might we go about capturing on the page the relationships that have formed us? How do we write about our bodies, their desires and traumas? What does it mean for an author’s way of writing, or living, to be dismissed as “navel-gazing”—or else hailed as “so brave, so raw”? And to whom, in the end, do our most intimate stories belong? Drawing on her own path from aspiring writer to acclaimed author and writing professor—via addiction and recovery, sex work and academia—Melissa Febos has created a captivating guide to the writing life, and a brilliantly unusual exploration of subjectivity, privacy, and the power of divulgence. Candid and inspiring, Body Work will empower readers and writers alike, offering ideas—and occasional notes of caution—to anyone who has ever hoped to see themselves in a story.

The Bible in History

The Bible in History. A study of the history, folklore, and occasionally even the mathematics underlying the Bible. A sort of dictionary of scholarly material you likely won’t find elsewhere. Dedicated to Elizabeth Rosenberg, Patricia Rosenberg, and Catie Jo Pidel. Please understand that this is not a Biblical commentary. Also, while I try very hard to avoid actual theological discussions, the work is very much based on "external evidence" -- the manuscripts of the Bible, the evidence of other historical records, the findings of science, the folklore about the Bible. Some of this can be offensive to some, particularly those who try to find exact literal truth in the Bible. I hope you will accept it (or else not read it :-) in that light. If you are still interested, there is a lot of historical background about the Bible here -- not always direct links to the Bible, but the context of the nations among whom the Israelites lived. There is no Biblical mention of (say) Nabopolassar of Babylon, but his actions would deeply influence Judean history. Knowing even a little of that history can help understand the Bible. Also, where there are variant readings in the manuscripts of the Hebrew Bible or the New Testament, I note it. This may mean that we are uncertain what the Bible says -- and hence what it means. I try either to recover the original meaning or, in some cases, to assess the meanings of both readings. And then there are the tidbits of science and folklore and anything else I can think of.... The result is a grab bag. Some parts may be useful, some may not. The idea is to browse and see what strikes your fancy. With luck, you'll understand more about the Bible after doing so.

The Bleeding Continent

This book tells the story of the sorry state of Africa. Although it acknowledges how Europe especially initiated and has surreptitiously maintained the ongoing predation on and the impoverishment of Africa, its major attention is on Africa’s self-betrayal, how Africa’s political leaders and elites have contributed in the present predicament of Africa. Beginning from the dishonourably sadistic roles some of the kings, chiefs, and elites of Africa played during the slave trade era to the predatory systems of governance many of their political leaders adopted after decolonisation and have maintained to date, this book x-rays the internal factors that are also responsible for the poverty of Africa. The author argues passionately, consequently, that only Africa can help Africa, not foreign aid or any external intervention. He stresses that unless the cannibalistic system of governance in many African states are reformed and systems that can stimulate and sustain economic growth adopted, the disappearance of Africa is imminent.

The Recovery Bible

The founders of the modern recovery movement, including Bill Wilson, Bob Smith, and other early AAs, were deeply influenced by a handful of inspirational authors, from whom they received practical guidance, key insights, and concrete ideas. Their explorations of inspirational literature and useable spiritual methods gave rise to the program of spiritual self-help now practiced around the world as the twelve-step tradition. Now, some of the core books that both inspired and were produced by the early twelve-steppers and recovery pioneers – including the first edition of the 1939 landmark Alcoholic Anonymous – are collected in this powerful resource, The Recovery Bible. Here are early writings by the visionaries of recovery. Their work retains all of its impact and life-changing power – now at the ready for study, immediate guidance, and a lifetime of re-exploration in this one volume. The Recovery Bible includes: -Alcoholics Anonymous, the original 1939 landmark - The Greatest Thing in the World by Henry Drummond -In Tune with the Infinite by Ralph Waldo Trine -The Mental Equivalent by Emmet Fox - As a Man Thinketh by James Allen -The 23rd and 91st Psalms -Religion that Works by the Rev. A Troubled Birth

Pollsters and pundits armed with the best public opinion polls failed to predict the election of Donald Trump in 2016. Is this because we no longer understand what the American public is? In A Troubled Birth, Susan Herbst argues that we need to return to earlier meanings of "public opinion" to understand our current climate. Herbst contends that the idea that there was a public—whose opinions mattered—emerged during the Great Depression, with the diffusion of radio, the devastating impact of the economic collapse on so many people, the appearance of professional pollsters, and Franklin Roosevelt’s powerful rhetoric. She argues that public opinion about issues can only be seen as a messy mixture of culture, politics, and economics—in short, all the things that influence how people live. Herbst deftly pins down contours of public opinion in new ways and explores what endures and what doesn’t in the extraordinarily troubled, polarized, and hyper-mediated present. Before we can ask the most important questions about public opinion in American democracy today, we must reckon yet again with the politics and culture of the 1930s.

The Pursuit of Dominance

"How do great countries stay that way? The United States is the most powerful actor in the international system, but it is facing a set of challenges that might lead to its decline as this century unfolds. This book looks to the past for guidance, examining the grand strategy of previous superpowers to see how they maintained, or failed to maintain, their status. Over the course of six cases, from Ancient Rome to the British Empire, it seeks guidance from the past for present U.S. policymakers. How did previous empires, regional hegemons, or simply dominant powers forge grand strategy? How did they define their interests, and then assemble the tools to address them? What did they do right, and where did they err? What - if anything - can current U.S. strategists learn from the experience of earlier superpowers?"--

The Syriac Book of Steps 2

The Syriac Book of Steps collects 30 memre by an anonymous late 4th century author in Persia. It describes the struggle of an actual Christian community, not an idealized one, to live a life in the pursuit of perfection in the midst of a hostile culture. The author details the aspirations and standards of the two ranks of Christians prior to the advent of monasticism: the Upright--married people who work and perform acts of charity--and the Perfect who are celibate, do not work, but live a life of prayer, wandering through the region teaching and mediating conflicts.

The Classic of Mountains and Seas

This major source of Chinese mythology (third century BC to second century AD) contains a treasure trove of rare data and colorful fiction about the mythical figures, rituals, medicine, natural history, and ethnic peoples of the ancient world. The Classic of Mountains and Seas explores 204 mythical figures such as the gods Foremost, Fond Care, and Yellow, and goddesses Queen Mother of the West and Girl Lovely, as well as many other figures unknown outside this text. This eclectic Classic also contains crucial information on early medicine (with cures for impotence and infertility), omens to avert catastrophe, and rites of sacrifice, and familiar and unidentified plants and animals. It offers a guided tour of the known world in antiquity, moving outwards from the famous mountains of central China to the lands “beyond the seas.” Translated with an introduction and notes by Anne Birrell.

Sanctified Aggression

Sanctified Aggression allies itself neither with the easy assumption that religions are by definition violent (and that only the secular/humanist/humane can offer a place of refuge from the ravages of religious authority) nor with the equally facile opposing view that religion expresses the "best" of human aspirations and that this best is always capable of diffusing or sublating the worst. Rather, it works from the premise that biblical, Jewish and Christian vocabularies continue to resonate, inspire and misfire. Some of the essays here explore how these vocabularies and symbols have influenced, or resonate with, events such as the massacre of Jews in Jedwabne, Poland (1941), the Rwandan Massacre (1994), the tragedy at Columbine High School (1999) and the emergence of the "Phineas Priesthood" of white supremacists in North America. Other contributors examine how themes of martyrology, sacrifice and the messianic continue to circulate and mutate in literature, music, drama and film. The collective conclusion is that it is not possible to control biblical and religious violence by simply identifying canonical trouble-spots, then fencing them off with barbed wire or holding peace summits around them. Nor is it always possible to draw clear lines between problem and non-problem texts, witnesses and perpetrators, victims and aggressors or "reality" and "art".
